Commission authorises creation of world's biggest pharmaceuticals firm, Glaxo SmithKline, which should sell exploitation of several medicinal products

Brussels, 09/05/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has cleared the merger between the two British laboratories, Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham. The move should give rise to the world's biggest pharmaceutical company with 7.3% of world sales. The new company, Glaxo SmithKline, will have very strong positions in several sectors: anti-virals, antibiotics, oncology and the treatment of diabetes and HIV.
