Parliament opposed to authorisation of certain new food additives

Strasbourg, 12/04/2000 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the report by Belgian Green member Paul Lannoye, the European Parliament amended at first reading (codecision) the European Commission proposal aimed at authorising nine new food additives other than colourings and sweeteners. The Parliament voiced its opposition for certain of these additives, namely:

1) Sodium alginate: used to make peeled, cut and ready-to-use carrots firmer. The substance also prevents superficial whitening...
