31/07/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday, 30 July, the Council of the EU formally approved extending the temporary protection status granted to individuals fleeing Ukraine until 4 March 2028. The measure will be reserved for those who are able to prove that they are complying with “their military obligations” in Ukraine with a stamped passport attesting to legal departure or an exemption document (see EUROPE 13897/19). European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner welcomed this decision on X. He emphasised, “At the same time, we must prepare responsibly for the future, supporting Ukraine’s defence and recovery while ensuring a coordinated transition when the conditions are right.” Activated in March 2022 after Russia’s invasion, this emergency mechanism grants harmonised rights related to housing, work, and education to Ukrainians in exile. It is currently helping 4.4 million people in the EU. (JM)
