Road freight transport in the European Union reached 1,886 billion tonne-kilometres in 2025, up 0.9% compared to the previous year, according to the latest data published by Eurostat on Friday 31 July.
The total volume of goods transported amounted to 13.3 billion tonnes, an increase of 1.8% compared with 2024.
Poland recorded the highest volume of freight transport, with 381 billion tonne-kilometres, or 20.2% of the EU total. It was ahead of Germany (277.4 billion; 14.7%), Spain (272.6 billion; 14.5%), France (172.9 billion; 9.2%) and Italy (161.7 billion; 8.6%). Taken together, these five countries account for 67.1% of the Union’s road freight activity.
The structure of the market remained broadly stable in 2025. Most freight was carried domestically, accounting for 62.2% of total tonne-kilometres, ahead of international transport (24.4%), cross-trade between third countries and EU countries (10.7%) and cabotage (2.7%). Over one year, domestic transport rose by 2.2%, while international transport recorded only a marginal increase (+0.3%). By contrast, cross-trade and cabotage fell by 3.7% and 3.0% respectively.
Trade between Germany and the Netherlands is the main road freight axis within the EU. Germany retains a key position, being the country of origin or destination for six of the EU’s 10 main flows.
