11/06/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 11 June, the European Commission announced that it had reached an important milestone in protecting Europe’s agri-food heritage. With the addition of 13 new products to the EU register of quality products, the EU now officially protects more than 3,700 geographical indications (GIs). The new GIs apply to products originating from Finland, France, Italy, Romania, Spain and Sweden. These include the protected designations of origin (PDOs) Pera del Bierzo (fresh pear) and Mothais sur feuille (goat’s cheese), as well as the protected geographical indications (PGIs) Zampina di Sammichele di Bari (meat sausage), Simojärven muikku (whitefish), Trufa negra de Teruel (black truffle), Babic de Buzău (red wine), Confit d’oie du Sud-Ouest (meat confit), Foie gras d’oie du Sud-Ouest (foie gras), Judión de La Granja (dried beans), Äpplen från Äppledalen (fresh apple), Peperoncino di Calabria (dried chilli pepper), Oie du Sud-Ouest (whole poultry) and Patata de Valderredible (potato).
