26/05/2026 (Agence Europe) – The European Public Prosecutor’s Office in Zagreb has charged three people and one company with subsidy fraud and forgery of documents in a case linked to European funds intended for reconstruction after the December 2020 earthquakes in Croatia. According to a statement of 26 May referring to the investigation, the owner of the company being prosecuted is alleged to have submitted false technical reports to the Croatian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, claiming that electrical infrastructure had been damaged by the earthquakes in Sisak-Moslavina County. Two other defendants, a court-appointed construction expert and a certified electrical engineer, are alleged to have taken part in forging the documents and inflating the repair costs. Approximately €2.5 million from the European Union Solidarity Fund is thought to have been granted, of which €1.7 million is alleged to have been unduly paid out.
