26/05/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 22 May the European Commission opened a public consultation running until 19 June, on the future ‘omnibus’ package, intended to make Europeans’ daily lives easier, with “a cross-cutting focus on simplification”, the institution states. The Commission work programme for 2026 provides for a comprehensive citizens’ initiative in the fourth quarter of 2026. “This initiative aims to set up a process to reduce administrative burdens in EU legislation which have a direct impact on the daily lives of people legally residing in the EU”. The initiative is aimed at EU citizens and people legally residing in the EU, enabling them to benefit fully from the single market when acting as private individuals. Further simplifications are possible in areas such as cross-border administrative procedures, educational mobility, the digital single market and financial services (banking, insurance and investments).
