26/05/2026 (Agence Europe) – According to a communiqué published by the European Commission, the European Union signed the Protocol amending the Council of Europe Convention on the Prevention of Terrorism on Tuesday, 26 May. This act introduces a pan-European legal definition of ‘terrorist offences’ in tune with Directive 2017/541 on combatting terrorism. It was negotiated by the European Commission and signed in Strasbourg by Vesna Kos, the EU’s ambassador to the Council of Europe. Once in force, this harmonisation will serve as a basis for international cooperation and prevention: it will notably facilitate mutual legal assistance as well as extradition requests among the Council of Europe’s 46 member states.
