As part of the consultation on the revision of the regulation on the implementation of the competition rules (‘antitrust’ regulation 1/2003), on Thursday 19 February the European Commission welcomed the high level of stakeholder participation. According to the EU institution, the contributions received show broad support for modernising this procedural framework in order to adapt investigative powers to an increasingly digital economy and enhance the effectiveness of competition law enforcement.
More than 80 contributions were submitted by a wide range of stakeholders, including businesses, associations, lawyers, civil society organisations, academics, citizens, public authorities and national competition authorities. The Commission says that this feedback provides a useful indication of the potential impact of the measures envisaged.
On the basis of an assessment published in September 2024, the Commission decided to start revising the regulation, in particular to speed up investigations. Analysis of the contributions will feed into the legislative proposal expected later this year, while individual contributions are already available to the public.
