SolarPowerEurope calls for no intervention in fundamentals of European electricity market

18/02/2026 (Agence Europe)In reaction to the proposals made by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at the informal summit in Alden Biesen on 12 February (see EUROPE 13807/2), the SolarPowerEurope association urged European leaders on Tuesday 17 February not to touch the foundations of the European electricity market. According to Deputy Director General Dries Acke, decision-makers already have the tools to act on high electricity prices, mentioning the existence of long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) and contracts for difference (CfDs). “Member States that fully implement the recently adopted electricity market legislation will immediately attract cost-effective flexibility solutions”, he stresses. He added: “Reopening the electricity market frameworks now or intervening in market fundamentals will slow down investment in solar and storage and, ultimately, produce the opposite effect”. (PLD)
