18/02/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 18 February, the European Commission announced the registration of two new protected geographical indications (PGIs) in the European Union’s register of geographical indications. Romanian ‘Batog de sturion’ is a food product made from the dorsal fillet of sturgeons from aquaculture. The manufacturing process involves salting with a mixture of rock salt and sugar, drying to a consistency of at least 35% residual moisture and smoking with hardwood to enhance flavour and colour. The sweet and salty taste is accompanied by a meaty flavour that is unique to the sturgeon species. The PGI ‘มะพร้าวน้ำหอมราชบุรี / Maphrao Namhom Ratchaburi’ from Thailand is an aromatic coconut classified as a short green coconut variety called Moo Si Khiao. These new names join the more than 3,900 protected names already registered in the eAmbrosia database. (LC)
