11/02/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 11 February, Amnesty International called on the Slovenian authorities to amend the law on urgent measures to ensure public safety. This statement by the NGO follows the filing by the Legal Network for the Protection of Democracy - in cooperation with Amnesty International Slovenia - of an appeal with the Constitutional Court of Slovenia concerning the text adopted in November 2025. It now allows the tax authorities to seize the welfare benefits of people who have accumulated at least three unpaid fines for minor offences in the last two years. However, the law does not provide any guarantees for the recovery of unpaid social security fines. According to an Amnesty press release, in January, more than 1,000 people and their families - the majority of them Roma - were deprived of any social support, thus falling into poverty. (NP)
