11/02/26 (Agence Europe) – On the evening of Tuesday 10 February, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service expressed the EU’s dismay at the new prison sentence handed down to Narges Mohammadi, the Iranian human rights defender and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Ms Mohammadi was sentenced to six years in prison on charges of “assembly and collusion” and an additional one and a half years for propaganda activities. “The charges against her are based solely on her peaceful advocacy for human rights”, denounced the spokesperson, who urged the Iranian authorities to release her “immediately and unconditionally, taking also into consideration her fragile health”. The spokesperson stressed that human rights defenders must be able to express themselves and carry out their legitimate work without fear of imprisonment or reprisals. (CG)
