Brussels, 10/02/2026 (Agence Europe) – Following validation by the parliamentary committee (see EUROPE 13790/27), the European Parliament validated the provisional agreement on the amendment to European climate legislation to include a target for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 at its plenary session in Strasbourg on Tuesday 10 February. This final objective is accompanied by a series of conditions and flexibilities, such as the inclusion of international carbon credits, enabling the EU to account for the emission reduction efforts of projects it finances abroad. However, Parliament has managed to introduce quality criteria to govern these credits (see EUROPE 13770/1). In a statement, the Commission said it would analyse “different options concerning the role of international credits, in conjunction with different legislation”. In particular, it stressed the need to guarantee the stability of the Emissions Trading System (ETS). (PLD)
