On Monday 9 February, Ola Källenius, President of theEuropean Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) and CEO of Mercedes-Benz, sent an open letter to European leaders calling on them to “strengthen the automotive industry through innovation, open markets and pragmatic green policy”.
To secure the value chain, which is not always located in Europe, the automotive sector is defending free trade. In particular, ACEA is calling on MEPs to approve the agreement with Mercosur (see EUROPE 13795/3).
“Any policy to strengthen production and investments in Europe should rely primarily on incentives and sit within a broader re-industrialisation push”, stressed Mr Källenius, before going on to give a series of examples.
ACEA is also calling for a targeted amendment granting flexibility to truck manufacturers to be adopted as a matter of priority “to generate more emission credits and facilitate compliance with the 2030 targets” (see EUROPE 13804/10).
Finally, ACEA hopes that regulatory simplification initiatives will continue and that intelligent incentives will be introduced to speed up fleet renewal.
