Brussels, 23/01/2026 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 23 January, the Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte agreed that the Alliance should increase its commitment in the Arctic. “Arctic defence and security is a matter for the whole Alliance”, explained Ms Frederiksen on X. “We’re working together to ensure that the whole of NATO is safe and secure and will build on our cooperation to enhance deterrence and defence in the Arctic. Denmark continues to make robust contributions to our shared security and is ramping up investment to do even more!”, explained Mr Rutte. The two political leaders met in Brussels the day after a summit of European leaders on EU-US relations (see EUROPE 13792/1), and ahead of a meeting in Nuuk between Ms Frederiksen and the Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, to continue their “close” collaboration, particularly as part of the preparations for joint diplomatic efforts.
