On Thursday 15 January, the European Commission announced the launch of two new calls for projects in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), totalling €307.3 million, to boost digital innovation and competitiveness in Europe.
€221.8 million will be allocated to projects contributing to the development of AI, in connection with the new ‘Apply AI’ strategy (see EUROPE 13726/20), robotics and quantum technologies. €40 million will be devoted to the ‘Open Internet Stack’ initiative.
The second call for projects, worth €85.5 million, will support open strategic autonomy in digital and emerging technologies and raw materials. More specifically, projects must involve next-generation AI or robotics for industrial applications.
According to the Commission, these calls for projects are in line with the objectives set out in the European ‘Competitiveness Compass’, and should help the EU to regain its foothold in the race for new technologies and strategic independence.
The two calls for projects are open until 15 April 2026.
