18/12/25 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 18 December, with 535 votes in favour, none against and 42 abstentions, MEPs adopted a resolution condemning the seizure of power by the army in Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday 26 November, three days after general elections in the country in which the main opposition party, the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, had been prevented from taking part (see EUROPE 13762/26). MEPs believe that the country’s electoral commission must publish the verified election results without any military or political interference. They also urge the European Union to immediately review its agreements and funding to ensure that they do not strengthen the junta or other authoritarian structures, and call on the EU Council to consider adopting restrictive measures against those responsible for the coup and human rights violations.
