On Thursday 18 December, the European Council rapidly reviewed the state of progress of the various European reforms of migration and asylum policies, and in its conclusions called for “priority to be given to stepping up work on all aspects, in accordance with EU and international law”.
Some fifteen Member States met in the morning for the now traditional breakfasts on migration, initiated by Italy, Denmark and the Netherlands and devoted to “innovative” solutions.
In addition to these three countries and the European Commission, the leaders of Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Germany, Greece, Poland, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Malta, Hungary and Sweden also took part.
“In addition to confirming Italy’s commitment on the front of innovative solutions and welcoming with satisfaction the new letter signed by the Ministers for Foreign Affairs and the Interior of 19 Member States on the topic of innovative solutions, I provided an update on the ongoing work on the capacity of international Conventions to respond to the challenges of irregular migration and on the forthcoming initiatives planned”, commented the Italian leader, Giorgia Meloni on X.
“Following the significant result of 10 December last, when 27 Member States of the Council of Europe signed the Italian-Danish political declaration, the work now continues in view of the Ministerial of the Council of Europe under Moldovan presidency on 15 May next”.
