28/11/2025 (Agence Europe) – Following a brutal seizure of power by the army in Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday, the European Union expressed its concern on Thursday 27 November. “In line with the statements issued by the Chair of ECOWAS [Economic Community of West African States - editor’s note] Authority and the African Union Commission Chairperson, we call for a swift return to the constitutional order and the resumption of the electoral process”, said a spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS). The military overthrew the outgoing president, Umaro Sissoco Embaló, shortly before the announcement, scheduled for Thursday, of the provisional results of the presidential election held on 23 November. “The vote count interrupted by the military intervention [...] should be allowed to proceed as planned. The results of the presidential and legislative elections should be respected by all parties”, added the EEAS spokesman. (BD)
