“Current climate policies and emergency responses continue to ignore the rights, needs, and lived experiences of persons with disabilities”. From this observation, which is central to its report published on Monday 17 November, the European Disability Forum has drawn up a set of demands for inclusive climate action.
Governments, EU institutions and climate advocates are therefore called upon to ensure that no one is left behind in climate action, by working to consult and improve the inclusion of people with disabilities in the decision-making process and by taking greater account of their rights in EU climate legislation, in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The aim would also be to support their personal preparedness plans and collect inclusive data.
Recommendations are made by the organisation, which also presents a series of accounts from people with disabilities affected by environmental disasters or faced with fuel poverty, and a case study on the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (see EUROPE 13390/20).
