05/11/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 5 November, the European Parliament’s Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) approved, by 41 votes to 4, the agreement with the EU Council on amending the mandate of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). Concluded in May (see EUROPE 13644/11), this agreement amends the regulation in order to strengthen EMSA’s role. The agency will thus be better equipped to help EU countries improve their maritime situational awareness in the face of new geopolitical challenges, such as Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, and to provide them with additional assistance in the field of maritime safety. EMSA will also focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships. Already adopted by the Council (see EUROPE 13729/35), the text still requires approval at the November plenary session.
