On Thursday 23 October in Riga, the European Commissioner for Digital Sovereignty, Henna Virkkunen, announced new funding of €20 million to strengthen the security of submarine cables in Europe.
The €20 million will come from the Digital Europe programme. An initial €10 million call for projects has been published by the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre for the creation of regional cable ‘hubs’ to monitor threats in real time.
A second €10 million call for projects under the Cyber Solidarity Act has also been launched, to strengthen the preparation and testing of critical infrastructures.
An expert report on the subject, commissioned by the Commission, was published the same day and sets out a mapping of sensitive infrastructures, as well as a methodological approach to risk assessment and stress tests.
