22/10/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 22 October, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said she was prepared to take action to guarantee the EU’s economic security, especially concerning access to critical raw materials. “I will be ready to propose further measures to ensure Europe’s economic security and I will accelerate what we have already put in motion”, she told MEPs in Strasbourg. The EU, she argued, must have full control over strategic clean technologies and their production. “We really have to fight for it”, she added. Earlier in her speech, she made an implicit reference to Chinese export restrictions on rare earths (see EUROPE 13735/32). “A crisis in the supply of critical raw materials is no longer a distant risk”, she insisted. As far as foreign investment was concerned, the President felt only that it would create quality jobs and add value in the EU. (LM)
