On Monday 15 September, Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, announced the launch of the online platform dedicated to the New Democratic Pact for Europe.
This website is “an invitation to learn, to engage, and to imagine the democracy Europe needs in a world where the centre of gravity is shifting. Because democracy lives in the decisions we make together”, he explained.
The site is built around three pillars to be brought to life within societies and in the daily lives of citizens: learning and practising democracy, protecting democracy and innovating for democracy.
All Council of Europe bodies, including the Secretary General and the entire Secretariat, the Committee of Ministers, the Parliamentary Assembly, the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities and the bodies of the European Convention on Human Rights, will mobilise their capacities and networks throughout a pilot phase planned for 2026.
Workshops and seminars will be co-organised with civil society, think tanks, universities and international organisations.
The aim is to prove, through action, that “democracy is not only worth believing in, but worth building every day”.
The Council of Europe reminds us that “democratic security – the resilience of our democratic institutions, freedoms, and values – is our first line of defence against the threats we face”.
