Payment of €250 million in macrofinancial assistance to Jordan

On Wednesday 17 September, the European Commission paid out €250 million to Jordan as part of the fourth macrofinancial assistance package approved in the spring, worth €500 million (see EUROPE 13621/26).

This first payment, which will be followed by two others of €150 million and €100 million respectively over the next two and a half years, was made possible after the signing, at the end of August, of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the European Union and Jordan, which outlines the reforms and policies that the Jordanian authorities are committed to implementing. It was also subject to respect for democratic principles, human rights and the provisions of the programme agreed between Jordan and the IMF.

At the beginning of August, the European Commission proposed granting Jordan a fifth macrofinancial assistance package worth €500 million to help the country consolidate its public finances and meet its external financial needs (see EUROPE 13694/22). (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
