01/08/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 31 July, the European Union condemned the extraterritorial arrest warrants issued by Hong Kong’s National Security Police on 25 July, targeting 15 pro-democracy activists, including, for the first time, an EU citizen. “This attempt at intimidating an EU citizen and curtailing freedom of expression within the European Union is unacceptable”, explained a press release from the European External Action Service (EEAS). More broadly, the EU is concerned about the extraterritorial application of the National Security Law and the transnational repression of opponents. It therefore calls on the Hong Kong authorities to uphold fundamental freedoms as enshrined in Hong Kong’s Basic Law and on China to honour its international commitments and the “one country, two systems” principle.
