On Tuesday 29 July, a new coalition of NGOs set up a monitoring tool to ensure the implementation of the European methane regulation, which came into force on 5 August 2024.
The European Civil Society Observatory on Methane (CSO-M) brings together 20 organisations across Europe to ensure that the EU regulation reduces methane emissions “quickly, fairly and transparently”.
The first version of their ‘Regulation Tracker’ is a civil society-led monitoring tool, which comes “at a time of growing civil society concern over delays and weak enforcement of the new law, both on national and pan-European level”.
It provides practical information on progress by country, support needs and areas for improvement in implementing the regulation.
Over the coming months, the members of CSO-M are committed, among other things, to extending the tracker’s features in line with emerging needs, monitoring implementation at national and sub-national level, and coordinating joint advocacy within the EU climate agenda.
