Heavily criticised in recent weeks (see EUROPE 13673/15) by some in the artificial intelligence sector, the AI Act officially comes into force in the European Union on Saturday 2 August.
Some of the obligations, particularly those relating to new general AI models placed on the market after 2 August and as defined in Article 5 of the act, apply from Saturday.
For older models, put on the market before August, the deadline is extended to 2027 to give suppliers time to adapt their models.
However, the Commission states that it will only be able to impose penalties on AI providers that break EU rules from 2 August 2026.
Signatories should be given time to implement the recommendations of the AI Code of Practice.
However, the effective application of the sanctions will have to await the official designation of the competent authorities responsible for assessing suppliers’ compliance. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
