31/07/2025 (Agence Europe) – In a report published on Tuesday 29 July, the NGO Greenpeace UK condemned the systematic lobbying by the world’s biggest companies to derail the Global Plastics Treaty. The NGO pointed out that the largest delegation present at the fifth negotiating session of the Global Plastics Treaty in Busan (South Korea) at the end of 2024 (see EUROPE 13536/14) was that of lobbyists (220 of them, according to the Centre for International Environmental Law). Greenpeace is calling for a reduction of at least 75% in plastic production by 2040, ahead of the final round of negotiations in Geneva from 5 to 14 August. Companies are criticised for wanting to limit the treaty to waste management. The EU Member States will advocate that the Treaty should cover the entire life cycle of plastics (extraction, production, waste management) (see EUROPE 13679/4).
