EUregions4cohesion coalition criticises post-2027 cohesion policy proposal

EUregions4cohesion, a coalition of 149 European regions, has firmly rejected the European Commission’s proposal concerning cohesion policy under the EU’s next multiannual financial framework (MFF) for 2028–2034 (see EUROPE 13683/14).

It believes it is essential that this proposal be thoroughly revised “if we want to preserve the DNA of European cohesion policy and its contribution to European integration and the European project”.

According to these regions, improvements are possible if the European Commission revises its approach and if the European Parliament takes action to reintroduce a real regional dimension into “national and regional partnership plans”.

The regions notably condemn the renationalisation of governance, which would weaken the direct partnership between regions and the European Commission.

Among other things, they are calling for regional preallocations for all European territories and for the creation of a specific title dedicated to cohesion in the regulation on the European Fund for economic, social, and territorial cohesion, which includes agriculture, rural areas, fisheries, maritime affairs, prosperity, and security as well.
