CAN Europe calls on EU to step up dialogue on international stage ahead of COP30

At a time when the Bonn climate negotiations (see EUROPE 13669/5, 13663/19), held from 16 to 26 June, revealed the existing divisions between developed and developing countries, CAN Europe has called on the European Union to adopt a more ambitious position ahead of COP30 in Belém (Brazil) in November.

In a progress report published on Monday 14 July, the NGO coalition expressed its concerns about the European Union’s difficulties in submitting a new nationally determined contribution (NDC) for the time being. According to the organisation, without an NDC that incorporates its 2040 target, the EU would lose credibility.

CAN Europe also has high expectations of the just transition programme, which must combine human rights, gender equality and support for the most vulnerable.

In addition, the network is calling on the EU to step up its commitment, in particular with a solid ‘roadmap’ on fossil fuel subsidies and greater support for the countries of the South.

CAN Europe is also calling on the EU to seize the leadership role, while the US is withdrawing from international climate action.
