27/06/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 27 June, German MPs adopted a two-year suspension of family reunification for refugees with subsidiary status in order to reduce immigration into the country, reported AFP. “Germany remains a country open to the world, but the capacity of our social systems has its limits, as does that of our education systems. The capacity of our property market also has its limits”, said the Minister for the Interior, Alexander Dobrindt. “Immigration to Germany must also have limits”, he insisted. Subsidiary protection is a form of international protection granted to foreign nationals who do not meet the conditions for recognition as refugees, but who are at risk of serious harm in their country of origin. On 25 June, Berlin also announced its intention to end its financial support for NGOs involved in rescuing migrants at sea. (SP)
