27/06/2025 (Agence Europe) – The European Environmental Bureau (EEB), ClientEarth, Carbon Market Watch and Ecos have called for a “strong directive on green claims to deter misrepresentation”, in a statement published on Monday 23 June. Using data from a European Commission study, the NGOs pointed out that 76% of products on the EU market carry an implicit or explicit ecological claim - and that more than half of these claims are misleading, unfounded or inaccurate. According to these NGOs, “only the practitioners of greenwashing would benefit from the abolition of this legislation” - a withdrawal to which the European Commission threatened to resort on Friday 20 and Monday 23 June (see EUROPE 13665/11) - while leaving “European consumers and businesses without clear rules”. The EEB therefore defended the possibility of the co-legislators reaching an agreement. (FS)
