11/06/2025 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 11 June, the European Commission announced that it had approved the addition of ‘Caralhotas de Almeirim’ (Portuguese), ‘Afyon Pastırması’ and ‘Afyon Sucuğu’ (both Turkish) to the Community register of protected geographical indications (PGIs). ‘Caralhotas de Almeirim’ are bread rolls produced in the municipality of Almeirim. Renowned for their round shape, golden crust and soft crumb, they are deeply rooted in local baking traditions. ‘Afyon Pastırması’ is a dried meat originating from the province of Afyonkarahisar. It is prepared from Anatolian beef or buffalo, seasoned with a fenugreek paste. ‘Afyon Sucuğu’ is a fermented and dried sausage, also produced in Afyonkarahisar. Made from Anatolian beef and buffalo, it is flavoured with spices and garlic. More than 3,662 agricultural designations are protected at EU level. (LC)
