EU funds earmarked for fighting forest fires being poorly used, says European Court of Auditors in report

The European Court of Auditors (ECA) has found that EU funds intended to combat forest fires are increasingly being used to finance prevention measures, but are not always spent where the needs and risks are greatest, states a report published on Wednesday 11 June.

This new ECA report comes ten years after the previous one, while the “number of forest fires affecting more than 30 hectares has tripled in the EU between 2006-2010 and 2021-2024”. Every year, fires destroy an average of...
