On Friday 6 June, the European Platform for Change published a series of practical recommendations aimed at attracting and retaining women in the transport industry (see EUROPE 13571/16).
Women account for only 22% of transport workers in the EU, and these recommendations could help to close the gender gap and remedy the staff shortage. The set of recommendations challenges outdated norms and promote inclusion, which will ultimately benefit all transport workers, in all their diversity.
The document highlights several key areas for action, including improving work-life balance, ensuring equal pay, promoting career development and creating a harassment-free workplace. It highlights the importance of mentoring programmes, flexible working conditions and inclusive recruitment practices that focus on potential skills rather than rigid qualifications.
The Platform also recommends working with employee representatives, trade unions and works councils.
