On Tuesday 27 May, the Council of the European Union launched eleven new projects within the framework of Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO). They are part of the EU’s preparedness effort and, therefore, of the strengthening of military capabilities in the 26 participating countries - Malta not being one of them.
The announced projects largely cover new technologies and concern the land, air, and maritime sectors. The list also includes a joint European initiative on electromagnetic warfare and in the same field, another project on directed energy systems, which harness the power of the electromagnetic spectrum in firing.
An unmanned airlift project for wounded soldiers and an unmanned aerial refuelling project have also been announced.
Other projects launched include a modular seabed vessel and an infantry navigation system that does not use satellites.
