European Commission launches four calls for contributions on ecodesign and labelling rules for refrigerating appliances

On Monday 26 May, the European Commission launched four calls for contributions on energy labelling and ecodesign requirements for household refrigerators/freezers and refrigerating appliances.

The Commission stresses that “existing measures must be regularly reviewed to ensure that they remain relevant, effective and efficient in the light of technological and market developments”.

In line with the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), these calls also aim to assess whether the rules can be extended to include issues such as product and raw material sustainability, reliability, reparability and recyclability.

The first two calls for contributions specifically target these ecodesign rules for both refrigerating appliances and for refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function.

The third call focuses on EU energy labelling rules for refrigerating appliances, and the fourth targets the same rules for refrigerating appliances with a direct sales function.

Stakeholders have until 22 June to respond to these calls for contributions. The Commission will then launch a public consultation later this year, with the aim of finalising the new rules in 2026.
