On Wednesday 16 April, the European business leaders represented by BusinessEurope published their expectations for the future ‘Quality Jobs Roadmap’, scheduled for 2025.
The organisation first points out that the notion of job quality “reflects many diverse realities as well as different workers’ and companies’ needs and perceptions”. The approach “should not consist of trying to define a European classification of ‘good’ vs. ‘bad’ jobs”.
BusinessEurope lists its conditions for creating the right conditions, such as “employers [needing] a stable, coherent and predictable legal and economic environment that promotes prosperous economies and societies. The applicable rules must be transparent, burdenless and easy to comply with. The introduction of additional - and inflexible - rules can prevent companies from staying competitive.”
There is also a need for “modern and sustainable social protection systems offering tailor-made solutions in an efficient way [...]. These systems should be accessible for all based on their contributions and offer innovative solutions for highly mobile workers, also in the cross-border context”.
Another criterion is the availability of a skilled workforce, whose skills are updated to meet the changing needs of the labour market. “Employers need to be supported in their efforts to finance training in line with national practices.”
“Specific elements influencing job quality are best defined through social dialogue at the appropriate level, as social partners are best placed to find solutions”.
