European Parliament and EU Council unable to agree on appointment of future European Data Protection Supervisor

Discussions between the Council of the EU and the European Parliament on the appointment of the future European Data Protection Supervisor are at a standstill.

At the beginning of January, MEPs and ambassadors from the Member States to the EU voted for their candidate, identifying two different names: Wojciech Wiewiórowski, the current holder of the post, for the member countries, and Bruno Gencarelli for the MEPs on the Committee on Civil Liberties (see EUROPE 13559/31).

Since then, despite two rounds of negotiations, both sides have refused to budge.

A second vote, held on Monday 7 April by the Parliament and on Tuesday 8 April by the Council, produced the same results. A third round of negotiations was scheduled for Thursday 10 April, but this has not been confirmed by the Danish ambassadors leading the talks.

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPB) is the EU’s independent authority that protects the personal data processed by the institutions and works with the national authorities to ensure consistent protection at European level. (Original version in French by Isalia Stieffatre)
