In accordance with previous statements by the Colombian minister of foreign affairs (see EUROPE 13602/28), Colombian President Gustavo Petro has invited his counterparts from the countries of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean to meet him on Sunday 9 and Monday 10 November in the seaside resort of Santa Marta, on the Caribbean coast.
Co-chaired by Mr Petro and President of the European Council António Costa, the EU/CELAC summit will seek to further strengthen the political, economic and cultural ties between the two regions and reaffirm a shared position on global challenges such as climate disruption, building on the momentum generated at the previous summit held in July 2023 in Brussels (see EUROPE 13225/1).
“Our partnership with Latin America and the Caribbean is grounded on a shared commitment to international law, multilateral cooperation and the Sustainable Development Goals”, said Mr Costa in a press release. Among the many areas of cooperation between the EU and Latin America, he cited “green, digital and social transitions ", " trade and investment” as well as “security and the fight against organised crime”.
