At the 69th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, which is being held from 10 to 21 March (see EUROPE 13597/28) in New York, the European Commissioner for Equality, Hadja Lahbib, reiterated the EU’s commitment in two speeches that she gave on Thursday 13 March.
The meeting of the Group of Friends on the elimination of violence against women and girls gave her the opportunity to recall the progress made in Europe, in particular the adoption of the first directive on the subject (see EUROPE 13431/33) and accession to the Istanbul Convention.
“Ending gender-based violence is not just a political commitment – it is a moral imperative and a legal obligation”, she said. Today, we renew our pledge to eliminate violence against women and girls by 2030”.
The EU is also positioning itself as a world leader, with initiatives such as the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative.
At the event ‘Who runs the world? Girls’ Activism Shaping the Future’, Ms Lahbib praised the role of young activists, victims of humanitarian crises, and pledged European support for them.
Commissioner Lahbib took the opportunity to outline the key elements of the EU’s roadmap, which was published on 7 March (see EUROPE 13595/1).
