On the evening of Tuesday 11 March, the representatives of the European institutions welcomed the news from Jeddah concerning the negotiations between the United States and Ukraine, in particular the proposed ceasefire agreement, the humanitarian efforts and the resumption of U.S. intelligence sharing and security assistance.
“This is a positive development that can be a step towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine”, stressed the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, António Costa, on X. “The ball is now in Russia’s court”, they warned.
In a statement on behalf of the EU, the two Presidents and EU High Representative Kaja Kallas emphasised that the EU was ready to play its full part in supporting the next stages of the peace negotiations, alongside Ukraine, the United States and other partners.
“The agreement today [...] is an important breakthrough and a step towards the lasting peace we have all worked for”, stressed the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, on X. On Wednesday, in a resolution on Ukraine, MEPs welcomed the proposed ceasefire (see other news).
On Wednesday 12 March, US President Donald Trump announced that American negotiators would be travelling to Russia “immediately” to discuss the truce. Earlier in the day, the Kremlin said it was waiting to be informed by Washington of its proposal.
