03/03/2025 (Agence Europe) – On 24 February, the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) published its final report on the grid incident of 21 June 2024 in the Western Balkans, presenting the facts gathered and the analysis of the causes of the incident (see EUROPE 13518/25). This occurred in June 2024 in South-East Europe (SEE), causing a substantial loss of load and production, affecting several countries, including Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia. The report identifies the root causes of the incident, such as initial short circuits caused by vegetation growing too close to the power lines. It also highlights the need for Transmission System Operators (TSOs) to develop common standards and extend their observability area into neighbouring grids in order to be informed of technical data in real time and to have a more complete view of the regional grid.
