EU releases €76 million for populations of South and South-East Asia

On Monday 3 March, the European Commission announced EU financial aid of €76.1 million to meet the needs of people affected by the major crises in South and South-East Asia.

€32.3 million will be earmarked for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, mainly in Cox's Bazar, to fund food aid, healthcare, access to water and improvements to camp infrastructure.

When home is not an option, humanity must be. The EU stands firmly with Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, just as we have for the past seven years”, said the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Crisis Management and Preparedness, Hadja Lahbib, alongside a visit to a refugee camp in Cox's Bazar on Monday.

€33 million will support people affected by the conflict in Myanmar, where humanitarian needs have exploded since the military takeover in 2021.

Finally, €10.8 million will be devoted to refugees in neighbouring countries such as India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, as well as to preparing for natural disasters in the region. (Original version in French by Bernard Denuit)
