On Friday 21 February, the think-tank and NGO network Transport & Environment (T&E) urged EU Member States to adopt a position on the Weights and Dimensions Directive (see EUROPE 13369/19) as soon as possible. It also called on European co-legislators to rapidly finalise the inter-institutional negotiations once Member States have reached a compromise.
According to the consultancy report by Apollo Vehicle Safety and Research Driven Solutions, reviewing this directive “can support the transition to zero-emission vehicles while preserving Europe’s roads and bridges“. Shifting a larger proportion of the European truck fleet to six-axle combinations would significantly reduce road infrastructure costs, not only compared to the European Commission’s proposal, but also compared to current road freight transport rules.
For example, Germany alone would save €2.67 billion, and Poland and Romania €150 million each.
