24/02/2025 (Agence Europe) – In 2023, Austria (87.8%), Sweden (87.5%) and Denmark (79.4%) led the way in the consumption of electricity from renewable sources, according to Eurostat on 21 February. Portugal, Croatia, Spain, Latvia and Finland are other countries where the share of renewable energies exceeds 50%. Conversely, the share for Malta, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg and Hungary was below 20%. The share of renewable energies in gross electricity consumption in the EU has reached 45.3%, a record increase of 4.1 percentage points compared to 2022. Wind power (38.5%) and hydro power (28.2%) were the main sources, followed by solar power (20.5%). Solar energy has seen the fastest growth, rising from 7.4 TWh in 2008 to 252.1 TWh in 2023.
