24/02/2025 (Agence Europe) – At the Foreign Affairs Council on Monday 24 February, the Council of the European Union appointed Latvian diplomat Eduards Stiprais as the European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for Central Asia for an initial term of two years, succeeding Terhi Hakala. From the moment he takes up his post on 1 March, Mr Stiprais will be responsible for promoting relations between the EU and the countries of Central Asia on the basis of shared values. He should also help to strengthen stability and cooperation between the countries in the region, as well as promoting the principles of democracy, the Rule of law and respect for fundamental freedoms. In cooperation with the High Representative, Kaja Kallas, Mr Stiprais will also be responsible for enhancing the EU’s effectiveness and visibility, in particular through closer coordination with other relevant partners and international organisations.
