On Wednesday 19 February, the EU Member States backed the European Commission’s proposal to mobilise €98.6 million from the agricultural crisis reserve to support farmers in Spain, Croatia, Cyprus, Latvia and Hungary who suffered the effects of natural disasters in 2024 (see EUROPE 13575/7).
The Commission will pay €68 million to Spain, €16.2 million to Hungary, €6.7 million to Croatia, €4.2 million to Latvia and €3.5 million to Cyprus as exceptional support. This aid will help to support farmers in these countries who have suffered a loss of production and, consequently, a loss of income. EU aid can be supplemented by up to 200% from national funds.
The national authorities will have to distribute this aid by 30 September 2025 and ensure that farmers are the final beneficiaries. The five Member States will also have to notify the Commission of the details of the implementation of this aid by 31 May 2025 at the latest. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
